THE CATGK A-FRAME CUBBY/CABIN

I have always wanted to design a house from scratch, even a tiny house as it turns out. It all seemed like a distant dream until John and Kellie Stone AKA Castle and Cubby reached out about collaborating. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect as we were dreaming of unique spaces to build for the kids in our overgrown backyard. Something a step up from a cubby space so it could grow with them into teen hood but still have that playful feel and be something they could call their own.

Immediately, I knew I wanted to work with Kellie and Johno. Married with two small children, Jethro and Shep, their family business has grown from a love of building something unique and creative from sustainable products that foster imaginative play for little folk.  Creating sustainable, eco friendly kid play spaces that encourage imagination and getting kids outdoors. They were also looking for a new challenge and so the CATGK A-Frame Cubby/Cabin came to life, introducing a new direction for their business which is about creating multipurpose spaces for the whole family.

the process

Back and forth we went until Castle & Cubby magically turned my A-Frame cabin dreams into a real, practical space that can be reproduced for families everywhere. It is without a doubt an investment for us, and with that in mind this space was designed to be multi functional. From a kids cubby, to a teenagers retreat or a guest cabin, we wanted this cubby to grow with our family.

 the features

Built from a mix of sustainable and untreated timbers, the cabin utilises stunning hardwoods on the feature panels. Perspex takes the place of glass, allowing light to fill up the cabin. While also being safe and durable for those wild little campers. One of the exciting, practical features is the side opening of the roof that creates an annexe. You can see how this allows the space to grow and change. Gapless flooring and waterproofing will keep you warm and dry at night, plus bug free. Last but not least is the design of an authentic cabin door.

 the installation

The CATGK A-Frame Cubby/Cabin can be installed anywhere on a flat surface as well as sloped surfaces on a platform (as we have done here) with decking. We really wanted to extend ours to include the jacaranda tree. This is the great thing about Castle & Cubby, you can work with them to customise your space to work with your yard. We combined a mud kitchen and picnic table from their range of products which also include different style cubbies, furniture, sand pits, swings and more — built from sustainable apple crates. Their team will come to your home and install everything within 2-3 working days.
